Drifting and 'Kidnap' Effect Due to Desync in High Latency

Status: Open
Priority:
High
Added by: Anonymous on October 26, '26
Assigned to:
Unassigned
Due date:
Reported for:
Actual Result:
Ghoul will fly towards a pretermined spot (different in every map), if reticle is placed on a survivor then it will trigger a "kidnap" effect, slowing survivor and removing prompts without applying swipe effects to the Ghoul.
Expected Result:
Should have leaped back to where the reticle point was, or misfired due to no active valid linger/reticle point.
Severity:
Major
Reproducibility:
Always
Platform:
Steam
Additional Notes & Comments:
Not set

Steps to Reproduce

  1. (If on HIGH latency 80-100ms+) Place reticle on object
  2. (If on HIGH latency) Look away from object
  3. (If on HIGH latency) Spam leap button
  4. (If on LOW latency <50ms) Same steps as 1-3 on High latency, but more button presses for leap are needed. can be done and abused via macro.

Explanation

Drifting Across Map as Ghoul due to desync between server and client.

When placing Kaneki's reticle on an object, it activates a linger point that will remain for a given amount of time. If reticle is moved away and not placed on a new valid reticle point, an attempted leap will trigger a leap either towards the last known valid linger point, or will misfire if the linger time has expired. This exploit occurs due to a leap command being placed during the period of time where the client side does not believe that the linger is still active, but the server does.

This is made more obvious on high latency due to the linger period being updated less often to the server, artificially extending the linger period while simultaneously making leaps take longer to trigger. This creates a situation where the window of time where the client side and server side are disagreeing on if there is a valid linger window longer, and allows for easier timing to send a leap command during this window.

Successfully attempting a leap during this window will force a "drift", and additionally a "kidnap" on a survivor if the reticle was placed on a survivor (reticle must be placed on object --> survivor --> non-valid reticle point due to linger mechanics). Kaneki will then drift towards a certain point in the map (for example the spot in Ormond Resort is in the corner behind shack, it will always be the same place on Ormond Resort but will be different on a different map).

An additional, slightly less exploity side effect of this is that the power will remain active permanently after the "drift" ends. Kaneki will move at his power walk speed indefinitely, and this permanent effect will only end if Kaneki successfully leaps, misfires, or bites a survivor. The end of the "drift" will be caused by bumping into an object, dropping substantial frames, or reaching the end point where the drift drags you to (very difficult as almost all spots are outside of the map borders).
